How to Play D&D
1. The Dungeon Master Describes the Scene
The Dungeon Master tells the players where their characters are, what's around them, and presents basic choices for each character (number of doors leading outside the room, items on the table, people in the inn, etc.).
2. Players Decide What to Do
While one player may speak on behalf of the entire party, often each player can take different actions, such as one player trying to unlock a door while another checks the wall for a secret passage.
Players don't necessarily have to declare "I/I will do this" in turn, but the Dungeon Master listens to all players and decides how to resolve these actions.
3. The Dungeon Master (and Players) Declare the Outcome
Resolving tasks is simple. If an adventurer wants to cross a room and open a door, the Dungeon Master simply says "The door opens" and describes what's beyond.
However, there are cases where it's difficult for the adventurer to complete the task, such as when the door is locked or a deadly trap is hidden in the floor. In such cases, the Dungeon Master decides what happens.
Often, what happens next depends on the result of a dice roll.
This process is repeated at every point in the game where a decision is needed.
In certain situations (especially combat), actions become more structured, and players (and the Dungeon Master) take turns choosing actions for the next resolution. However, for the most part, gameplay is fluid and changes according to the circumstances of the adventure.
In combat, the Dungeon Master can prompt players to declare attacks and finishing blows to deepen the game's immersion.
