What is it?
Sugarcane is a renewable, fast-growing resource that is cultivated for many purposes, such as sugarcane juice. After the juice is extracted, the sugarcane stalk is typically burned or discarded. However, these crushed stalks can be preserved and transformed into other items before being discarded. This material is recovered and used to make disposable packaging.
Why choose sugarcane products?
We know that forests are threatened worldwide, so it's important for us to find alternative materials that don't require pristine forest resources. For bagasse, you can still use high-performance disposable paper products, but know that we are choosing a product made from rapidly renewable and recoverable sugarcane instead of trees. Best of all, the product can be composted at the end of its life.
What's so cool about this?
Because we consume the sugarcane before it's discarded, the stalk is now a recovered resource. We're able to break it down into a pulp that can be used to make products that would otherwise be made from wood fiber. This means that fewer trees are needed to produce these products, and we have recovered waste that would otherwise be burned or landfilled.
