In my case, in solo songs, I often use 1 and a half note choking etc. on string 1 (high C), so instead of 032 in the 6-string set, I use 028, which is a slightly narrow rose string, in combination with a 5-string set. Also, by choosing a gauge that is all strings thicker for downtuning, such as tuning down a semitone, the sense of incongruity during switching is eliminated.
