‘Hogushi-ori’, a traditional technique within Koshu-ori
‘Hogushi-ori’ is a weaving technique in which a stencil is applied to a temporary weave of warp and weft threads, and colours are carefully layered one at a time before the final weaving takes place.
As the weft threads from the temporary weave are removed one by one during the final weaving process, the dyed patterns shift ever so slightly, creating a watercolour-like effect.

The fabrics in this series feature a plain front and a reverse side woven using the ‘Hogushi-ori’ technique to depict a floral pattern across the entire surface, expressing a traditional Japanese aesthetic through a vivid range of colours. The watercolour-like design, unique to Hogushi-ori, creates a warm and cheerful impression.

We use ‘Koshu-ori’ fabric, woven in Yamanashi Prefecture, which boasts a history of over 400 years as a renowned centre for textile production.
Koshu-ori is created by weaving dyed fine threads at a high density and with uniformity, achieving deep, lustrous colours and an elegant, substantial texture; it continues to be renowned for its high quality to this day.
The unique weaving technique—which uses twisted yarn for the warp and single yarn for the weft—is a distinctive feature of Yamanashi textiles found nowhere else, resulting in an extremely precious fabric of which only about 4 metres can be woven in a single day.
By processing this fabric to create umbrella fabric, we not only achieve a luxurious appearance but also produce umbrellas that combine high water resistance with exceptional durability.
Furthermore, as it is woven on narrow-width shuttle looms—which are now extremely rare—the fabric’s selvedges are free from stitching, giving it a crisp, clean appearance and ensuring there is no risk of fraying, even with long-term use.
