Ortofon's OM series, with its distinctive design, traces its origins to the Concorde series, an integrated headshell model released in 1979, and the LM series, which could be mounted on a headshell.
These products were born out of a trend at the time where many cartridge manufacturers were enthusiastically working towards lower mass and lighter tracking force. The LM series, in particular, achieved an ultra-lightweight body weighing just 2.6g, which proved to be the decisive factor in this trend.
Since many products considered lightweight at the time weighed around 5g, the LM series can be said to have embodied the ideal of "low mass" cartridges at that era.
Subsequently, the OM series housing, which was born from the development of the lightweight MC200 Universal, features a body weighing 2.5g, even lighter than the LM series. By attaching a removable 2.5g brass extra weight (described later), the cartridge weight is increased to 5g, and consideration has been given to versatility with tonearms that are not exclusively for lightweight cartridges.
The OM 5 series of MM cartridges, which most strongly inherits this lineage of low-mass cartridges, features the Super OM 5E (elliptical stylus), which bears the "Super" name. Within the series, only this model uses high-grade housing materials and magnetic circuits, regardless of cost.
On the other hand, by maintaining the same basic design philosophy, the lineup consists of three models, including the entry-level OM 5E (elliptical stylus) and OM 5S (round stylus), which offer excellent cost performance while preserving performance.
This series boasts optimal performance not only for audiophiles striving for Hi-Fi, but also for vinyl record listeners who simply love vinyl and want to immerse themselves in the music.
