Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... This film is based on a comic book in which famous characters, many of whose names everyone has heard, form an alliance to fight evil. The story follows the group as they fight against an armed group disrupting the peace of Europe in the late 19th century, but an unexpected conspiracy lurks behind the events. The premise is so bizarre that don't faze you with the story's inconsistencies. Instead, focus on enjoying the visuals "for what they are." The Invisible Man's espionage, Jekyll's transformation into Hyde, and the spectacular battle action all feature cutting-edge VFX. Meanwhile, the designs of the submarine "Nautilus" and the automobile "Nemomobile" bring to the forefront a retro feel reminiscent of the 19th century, sure to appeal to enthusiasts. Sean Connery, who plays the adventurer Alan (the only character unfamiliar to Japanese people) who becomes the leader of the alliance, leaves a good impression by not overbearing in his leading role. With the heroes playing an all-star cast, it's perhaps inevitable that the overall impression is a bit scattered. (Saito Hiroaki)
