Jizo Bodhisattva (Jizo Bosatsu), also known as Ojizo-sama, is the deity who governs the earth that nurtures all life. It is said that Jizo Bodhisattva embraces and saves people with his great compassion. He is said to be an incarnation of King Yama, and is believed to save those who pray to Jizo Bodhisattva even once in this life by taking their place and saving them from the sufferings of hell. Unlike other Buddhas, Jizo Bodhisattva is said to travel directly through the six realms of existence, including the realm of humanity, and thus is affectionately referred to as "Ojizo-sama." The six realms are the realm of humanity, heaven, hell, hungry ghosts, animals, and asuras. Cemeteries often have six Jizo statues enshrined. In Buddhism, this is called the Six Realms of Reincarnation, and one Jizo is in charge of watching over each realm, guiding ancestors and deceased loved ones who have been reincarnated into one of the six realms.
