■Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha) - The principal deity of the Soto, Rinzai, and Tendai sects. Born as a prince in Kapilavastu, ancient India, Shaka Nyorai was a real person, born Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Pursuing a path to universal happiness, he became a monk at age 29. After undergoing various trainings, he attained the highest level of enlightenment, known as Buddhahood, at age 35, and this is the image he possesses. He is also known as "Shakyamuni" (Buddha) because he is the most revered member of the Shakya clan. He is beloved by people as the eternal savior of all living beings. As the only person on Earth to attain enlightenment, Shaka Nyorai is said to have "no Buddha before Shaka," and "no Buddha after Shaka." He is a great benefactor to humanity, preaching the "truth" and saving people. Shaka Nyorai is enshrined in various forms, but he is often depicted alongside Manjusri and Samantabhadra as part of the Shaka Trinity.
