Taro Okamoto (1911-1996) While participating in the avant-garde art movement in Paris in the 1930s, he studied ethnology under Marcel Mauss at the University of Paris and worked alongside Georges Bataille and others. He returned to Japan in 1940. He developed the avant-garde art movement in postwar Japan, producing a succession of controversial works. In 1951, he encountered Jomon pottery, and the following year published "On Jomon Pottery." In the late 1950s, he traveled across Japan, leaving behind numerous photographs and essays. As the theme producer for the 1970 Osaka Expo, he created the Tower of the Sun, becoming a national figure. Even after his death in 1996, he continues to have a major influence on younger generations.
