You don't know the real Pinocchio yet.
This live-action adaptation of a masterpiece of children's literature boldly overturns existing images. Welcome to a beautiful yet cruel forest of dark fantasy.
Carlo Collodi's "The Adventures of Pinocchio," published in Italy in 1883, is a children's book that has been read around the world for over 100 years, and its animated version by Disney has also become a beloved favorite. A stop-motion animation by director Guillermo del Toro and a new live-action film by director Robert Zemeckis are currently in the works.
However, while everyone remembers the famous anecdote about "his nose growing when he lies," few know the true nature of the protagonist of this classic novel. While he appears to be an innocent puppet, in reality he is a "bad boy" who stirs up trouble wherever he goes. Matteo Garrone, the genius behind "Gomorrah," returns to his roots to create a fresh visualization of Pinocchio's fantastical adventures as a transformed log. The film's stunning visuals capture the allegorical storyline, incorporating the bizarre creatures encountered along the way, the absurdities of life, and social satire. Released in Italy during the 2019 Christmas season, the film was a huge hit. Its innovative and artistic visuals have garnered rave reviews, including 15 nominations (winning five) at the David di Donatello Awards, Italy's equivalent of the Oscars, and two at the Academy Awards (Best Costume Design and Best Makeup & Hairstyling). The love between father and son between Pinocchio and Geppetto is embodied by Federico Elapi, a talented child actor discovered by Garrone, and Roberto Benigni, known for his role in "Life is Beautiful." A mysterious and surprising dark fantasy worthy of being called a fairy tale for adults has been born.
Synopsis
A puppet made from a log by poor woodworker Geppetto (Roberto Benigni) begins to speak as if it has come to life. The mischievous puppet, named Pinocchio (Federico Elapi), runs away from Geppetto and is lured deep into the forest.
