Cultivating the Ability to Connect with People and Society Through "Dialogue Skills": The Comprehensive Japanese Textbook "Dekiru Nihongo"
In 2011, "Dekiru Nihongo" was born from a joint development project between Japanese language school teachers and two publishers, ALC and Bonjinsha. Through numerous trials and incorporating feedback from many Japanese language learners and teachers, it was refined over six years, resulting in a textbook "born and nurtured in the field, for learners and teachers."
The "Dekiru Nihongo" series aims to cultivate the ability to "express oneself and one's thoughts" and "the ability to communicate and converse in Japanese." It places emphasis on "dialogue skills" within Japanese communication, fostering the ability to connect with others. "Dekiru Nihongo" is a textbook that is enjoyable for both teachers and learners.
The "Beginner/Intermediate" level builds upon the topics learned in the "Beginner" level, progressing through learning that expands the range of people, situations, and contexts, thereby increasing what one "can do."
★About the Publication of the Second Edition
More than 10 years have passed since the release of the "Dekiru" series, and society, people's ways of thinking, and the environment surrounding learners have all changed. Therefore, to enable learners to learn in a way that is more relevant to the times, we have added and revised some of the content and published it as the [Second Edition].
★Three Major Features of "Dekiru Nihongo"
1. Because the syllabus is aligned with behavioral goals, you will be able to do more in Japanese!
To be able to do something in Japanese, it is important to firmly grasp "how to say it in this situation and context." In lessons using this book, learners and teachers share situations and topics, and the teacher asks learners "how to say it here and now," while learning necessary sentence patterns and vocabulary. Also, these "situations" and "topics" are brought up repeatedly. By using previously learned items repeatedly, Japanese communication skills are enhanced.
2. Because situations and contexts are shared, "communication skills" improve!
The book uses many illustrations, so situations and contexts can be understood at a glance. The teacher and learners share the situation before practicing conversation. Practicing through real-life scenarios and situations broadens the range of conversation. Teachers who observe lessons using "dekiru" (can do) are surprised, exclaiming, "The learners can speak this much!" This is because the learners' "communication skills" are improving.
3. By focusing on "speaking in chunks," paragraph structure skills are developed!
One of the goals of this book is to develop paragraph structure skills. While typical beginner textbooks mostly feature short dialogues of one or two sentences, this book is designed from the beginner level with the emphasis on "speaking in chunks"—from one sentence to a list of sentences to a paragraph. The goal is for learners to connect sentences as much as possible and be able to convey their thoughts and feelings in reasonably long pieces. Learners will be able to fully enjoy the pleasure of "communicating and discussing" in Japanese.
