This [Kamawanu] hand towel features a traditional spring pattern imbued with auspicious meaning. “Kamawanu” is a visual pun, combining the characters for sickle (kama) + circle (wa) + cloth (nu). These visual puns were a form of riddle popular in the Edo period. “Kamawanu” expresses the spirit of Edo townspeople who selflessly helped the weak, disregarding their own well-being. Please enjoy these classical patterns, each with a unique story to tell.

・The Meaning Behind the Pattern: This pattern depicts the animals from the Chooju-jinbutsu-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals) enjoying a lively modern festival. By combining these animals, traditionally beloved as symbols of longevity and prosperity, with the “Ennichi (Summer Festival),” believed to connect people with the gods and ward off evil, we have created a truly auspicious design. The vibrancy of the festival, where people gather and enjoy themselves, is filled with heartfelt wishes for “family safety” and “good fortune” – to ward off misfortune and for all family members to achieve their goals.
・[Kamawanu] hand towels are made with total-weave (bun) fabric. Compared to the specially fine fabric used for picture hand towels, this fabric has a coarser weave and is thicker. As a result, it is highly absorbent and breathable, making it a practical hand towel. Total-weave fabric gains character and charm with use.
・There are two main types of fabric used for hand towels: “bun” and “oka.” Bun fabric is woven with thicker, 20-count yarn, while oka fabric is woven with finer, 30-count yarn. Oka fabric, made with fine yarn, has a finer weave, allowing for detailed designs such as delicate patterns and gradations. Bun fabric, made with thicker yarn, has a coarser weave than oka fabric. However, this allows for excellent breathability and absorbency, making it ideal for use as a handkerchief or cleaning cloth. While it cannot match the fine detail expression of oka fabric, it offers the appeal of feeling the texture of the cloth.
